Crashed!

My computer, along with our photos and videos, has crashed. Again. You would think I would've learned from the last time to backup my photos and videos... But no... nope! Actually I was in the process of finding an online storage program for my videos and photos that would allow me to import and export them for free. So if anyone knows of anything like that (other than DropShots; I don't like them!) please let me know! I can't let this happen again. All my videos of my Zoƫ baby are GONE except for the very few I was able to upload to Facebook.

Even more helpful... if anyone knows if there's a way that I can find and retrieve my photos and videos on my computer I would probably cry. For now I need to first get the computer fixed.

Ugh. I hate this. I swear these companies program their products to break at a certain point.

http://mypicturetown.com/ This is that FREE Nikon site I've told you about before. You can also burn your photo's and videos to disc as another backup. I need to do that with mine. The CDs are pretty cheap too. Does your computer have a CD burner? I know there is a way to retrieve pictures of your computer. I don't know how to do it though. Maybe Rodger would know.

It depends on how your computer crashed. If the hard drive died then likely your photos are gone - it is possible to get photos off a dead hard drive but the technology is fairly expensive.

But - if something else (software corruption, operating system issues, ANY of the hardware BUT the drive itself, including the cables/power for the drive) failed, then all your data is still there and someone can just cable it to another computer or pop it in an external holder and get the data off.

If, however, you take it in to get it fixed, and the place that's fixing it doesn't know your data is important to you, they may get rid of it without meaning to. My husband just took his laptop in to be fixed and they warned him that if they have to send it to the manufacturer, they would have to first set the disk back to how it was - and all his data would be lost. So they helped him to cable it up and get the data off.

If you know a local-to-you computer geek, you may want to have them try that before the fixing part.

As far as backups - if you can afford a one-time fee, I'd recommend an external hard drive and the CrashPlan software (it's free for backup to an external hard drive, they do charge a yearly fee to backup over the internet). That will save you in case of a computer failure, although it won't help if there's something that destroys the computer and everything around it. (I actually pay for the online service but I wonder whether my photos would really be a priority if, say, my house burned down. Then again, they might be my only consolation!)

What Laura said is true. Our hard drive crashed and we lost about 2,000 pictures....all of Emily's babyhood and toddlerhood. We had a computer expert look at our computer and he said for $2,000 someone who specializes in this sort of thing could "possibly" retrieve our photos.
Travis went out and bought me an external hard drive and that is where I upload and store all my pictures.

We had this happen to Josh's laptop about a month ago. He went in and restored the computer to an earlier date and got EVERYTHING back. Try it! If you don't know how, email me and Josh can send you directions.

Good luck!

I'm pretty sure that the Geek Squad at your local Best Buy should be able to retrieve everything...but I think it's a couple hundred bucks. We have a techie friend (who worked as a techie at Jeff's former school) who retrieved our stuff for $100.

Hey! Sorry, it's been a LONG time since I have been blog hopping around the blogosphere... crazy life I have! I do frequent facebook often... if you want to be my friend. I just 'liked' joy belle, so you can go find me and friend me, cause I've been looking and can't seem to find you. Your girls are gorgeous, and I can't believe Zoe is a year old already! Crazy!
